A new cruise terminal is being built in IJmondhaven in IJmuiden. The opening is planned for May 4 when MSC Opera calls the Dutch port for the first time.

The entrance to the IJmondhaven was dredged in spring 2011 which means that vessels up to 295m can be accommodated. The port is now investigating the possibility of extending this to 320m.

The address of the new cruise terminal will be Cruiseboulevard no10. The building will be situated at the back of the harbour basin and will cater for the two available berths.

Calls to Trondheim this year are expected to reach 56 this year, the highest number since 1983.

This compares with 40 in 2011. Kirsten Schultz, sales and marketing manager Trondelag Tourist Board, says: “We are very happy about this as we see it as a first result of the more strategic marketing and sales efforts we have been making towards the cruise industry since 2010”.

Passenger numbers are forecast to be 79,500 compared to 43,000 last year. In 2010 although calls numbered 52, passengers carried were 58,000 so the ships calling this year are larger.
