Dover Harbour Board, UK, is investing £10m (E11.2m) in refurbishing Cruise Terminal 1 and the covered walkway on Admiralty Pier.
The preliminary design is underway and it is hoped that the detailed design will begin this autumn. Mike Krayenbrink, director port operations Port of Dover, says: “Our heritage projects will protect these iconic structures for another century for the enjoyment of all who see and use them. It will ehance the appearance of Dover’s cruise terminal in the Western Docks, with the works returning a grand Victorian building back to its former glory and contributing towards the regeneration of the Western Docks ahead of Terminal 2.”
The steel and glass cathedral-style roof of the terminal - a listed building - will be removed and replaced (top left in photograph). Although previously refurbished after war damage, the roof has deteriorated along with roof access walkways and protective barriers.
The new roof will be formed of laminated glazing. It will need to withstand impact from wave-thrown shingle from the adjacent beach as well as wave spray and sometimes waves themselves. The roof system will be designed to allow safe access for future maintenance.
