One year after the inauguration of the new pier in Leixoes, the number of passengers is more than double the 13,000 recorded in 2011.
About 29,000 cruise passengers visited Oporto during the first half of 2012. The 118% growth in passenger numbers is the result of both an increase in the number of calls but also the dimension of vessels calling.
From January to June 2012, Leixoes received six more ships than the previous year (31 vessels in 2012, against 25 last year) and the tonnage of ships doubled from 618,000gt in 2011 to 1.25m gt this year.
The Port of Leixoes received four cruiseships on the same day for the first time this year: Cunard Line’s Queen Victoria; P&O Cruises’ Ventura; Oceania Cruises’ Marina and Kristina Cruises’ expedition vessel Kristina Katarina.
This growth is already above the goals initially set for the construction of the new cruise terminal of Leixoes. This reflects the effort being made by the Port Authority to place Leixoes in amongst the major European cruise ports on the Atlantic Coast.
