Trondheim is expecting 64,600 passengers on 42 calls this year with 63,950 on 40 calls estimated in 2012.
Maiden calls at the Finnish port this year include Costa Deliziosa, Compagnie du Ponant’s Le Boreal, Clipper Adventurer and AIDAblu.
The port can handle up to three cruiseships a day and a total of at least 4,000 passengers without congestion, according to Kirsti Ostensjo, marketing consultant Trondheim Port Authority/coordinator Trondheim Cruise Network Mid-Norway, who adds: “We have welcomed even more passengers on the same day on several occasions.”
There are two quays availabe for cruiseships. Quay 68 is the main quay and has a length of 98m, a draught of 13m and a 4m high quay side. In 2010 Queen Mary 2 (345m long) came alongside for the second time.
Quay 30 is 156m long, has a draught of 8.5m and a 4m high quay side. Crystal Symphony (238m long and 8m draught) called in 2010 and this is the maximum size of ship the quay can take.
There is also anchorage and the turning basin is unlimited. There are no air draught restrictions. Waste water and recycling facilities are available.
The city centre is 1km from Quay 68 but a new pedestrian bridge is opening in December. Not only will this reduce the walking distance to 600m but it will also make it easier for passengers to find their way to the centre in just 10 minutes.
This summer the hope is that two more winches will be mounted at the quay reducing the need for mooring personnel and hence reducing costs.
