In May the Stockholm Municipal Council gave the go-ahead to expand the Varta Pier. Construction work is due to begin in September and be completed in 2016.
The new Pier will give an entirely new gateway to Stockholm for passengers arriving by sea.
The Pier will be expanded by 67,000m2 and the Varta harbour basin by 17,000m2. Ports of Stockholm will make an equivalent area available in the environs of the port for housing and other development.
When complete the new port will cover an area of 131,000m2 which is equivalent to the area the port occupies today but there will be five quays instead of four.
The project is a joint collaboration between Ports of Stockholm and Exploateringsnamnden.
