Mariehamn on the Åland Islands is situated in the very heart of the Baltic Sea. Åland is an autonomous region in Finland, with its own flag, stamps and license plates. It is a welcoming harbor near Stockholm, Helsinki and St. Petersburg. On the 6500 islands that make up Åland you’ll find an exciting mix of Swedish, Finnish and Russian culture.

The perfect antidote to a hectic, big city, Mariehamn is the capital for Åland’s 6500 islands. You walk from the western to the eastern harbor in only 15 minutes. This makes the world's smallest capital an ideal town for walking and shopping with plenty of attractions, activities and sights within easy reach.

The Islands of Peace, as Åland is often called, is a demilitarised territory. Still, popular attractions include the castle of Kastelholm and the Russian fortress ruins of Bomarsund, both dating from days when things were not as peaceful. Åland is also a dream for nature lovers; activities include sport fishing, kayaking, golfing and biking.

Attraction & Excursions

Museum ship Pommern

Mariehamn has strong martime traditions. Four-masted cargo sailing ship Pommern close to the cruise quay is the world's only four-masted barque still kept in original condition.

Åland Maritime Museum

Near the Pommern lies the newly upgraded and world reknown Åland Maritime Museum. The museum tells of ship owners, deep-sea sailors and the dramatic Cape Horn round-offs.

Castle of Kastelholm

Built in the 1300s, the castle of Kastelholm has been through both sieges and piracy and has an interesting story to tell.

Russian fortress ruins of Bomarsund

The Russian army started construction work in 1834, but before being entirely completed British and French soldiers and war ships overthrew the fortress during the Crimean War in 1854.
