With £20 million invested in a new cruise berth in 2007 and our excellent geographical location in relation to the Irish ports, Liverpool is becoming a world class port of call as visitors from across the globe arrive at the city's iconic waterfront.
Our brand new facility enables giants of the cruise industry, including the Queen Mary 2, to tie up alongside the UNESCO designated World Heritage site at Liverpool’s famous Pier Head. The city waterfront was awarded World Heritage Status as 'the supreme example of a Maritime Mercantile City' in recognition of the key role it played in the growth of world trade, mercantile culture, mass European emigration and the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.
The World Heritage Site stretches along the waterfront from Albert Dock, through The Pier Head and past the City of Liverpool Cruise Terminal, up to Stanley Dock. It stretches through the historic commercial districts and ‘Rope Walks’ areas, to the cultural quarter which is dominated by the magnificent St. George's Hall – where Charles Dickens gave regular readings of his works.
A stylish and vibrant city, steeped in history and rich in cultural heritage, Liverpool is the birthplace of the Beatles but equally famous for its humour, passion for sport, friendly locals, music and more recently for being European Capital of Culture in 2008. We’ve got more museums, galleries and theatres than any other UK city outside London, two magnificent cathedrals, amazing architecture, fantastic restaurants, cafes and bars and one of the UK’s most chic, ultramodern retail centres – Liverpool One.
Visitors can choose from a host of awardwinning attractions, the surrounding region is renowned for its picturesque English villages and breathtaking coastline and the Roman City of Chester and the stunning landscapes of the Lake District and Wales are only a stones throw away. Liverpool is a city bursting with energy and passion to be explored and enjoyed. No wonder Carl Jung called it the ‘Pool of Life’.
